Get ready to see Colin Kaepernick’s old No. 7 jersey reused on the 49ers, all due respect to kicker Tristan Vizcaino’s 2020 cameo and quarterback Nate Sudfeld’s preseason auditions.
Cornerback Charvarius Ward is changing his jersey number to No. 7, from the No. 35 he received when he arrived in free agency after four years in that number with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Sudfeld wore No. 7 during the preseason but was cut on Tuesday, when the 49ers kept Jimmy Garoppolo and Brock Purdy as replacements for Trey Lance.
Ward, by the way, prefers to be called by his family nickname of “Mooney” – or as he described it last week, “It’s like ‘Money’ with two ‘O’s.”
Kaepernick’s No. 7 became the NFL’s best-selling jersey during the 2016 season, his last in the NFL, in which he knelt during the national anthem to protest social inequality and police misconduct.
Vizcaino wore No. 7 in the 2020 Season Finals loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He replaced Robbie Gould, who was on the COVID reserve list.
Tight end Tyler Kroft is the latest 49er to be assigned the number 81, which has been worn by 14 others since wide receiver Terrell Owens, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
