ROB WEBBER is wary of a Coventry side who hammered their Jersey Reds players last season as the clubs prepare to trade blows in the Championship Cup semi-finals.

The Islanders have won home and away wins against the Midlands outfit in 2021/22, but the head coach still sees warning signs, following last May’s 34-10 defeat at St Peter and the recent cup race of their rivals.

Coventry, which visits on Friday evenings [7pm kick-off] finished the league campaign in eighth place but played the overall scoring system well in the cup – overtaking Ampthill in the first round before beating season promotion hopes Doncaster Knights over two legs in the quarter-finals.

The Reds eventually qualified for the last four with a 30-14 win over Hartpury last Friday, but their progress came at a price. Four of the starting XVs from this encounter are now ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

Tim Gray and Eoghan Clarke both suffered severe ankle ligament damage while James Elliott fractured his collarbone. Sean O’Connor, who was ejected for dangerous play in a ruck, received a four-week suspension.

“It was tough getting them out injured,” Webber said. “We’re missing some quality players and it’s hard to see these guys, who worked really hard, injured. Everyone wants to play in these great games so you feel for them. Sean is included in this after getting a red with no intent or malice. It’s just the letter of the law and we have to carry these things.

He added: “The league is the league and the cup is the cup. Teams approach it in certain ways; Coventry went in and got their results and they will be a very tough team to play in the semi-finals. They came here around this time last year and gave us a good beating so we have to prepare appropriately.

Webber is also hoping the club professionals will establish a positive stall ahead of Saturday’s inter-island triple header at the Santander Stadium.

“Those occasions are what make rugby so special. As Reds we are delighted with the Siam Cup, just as I’m sure Athletic will be delighted with our semi-final.

You can check off another to-do for the Arizona Cardinals 2022 NFL Draft class.

The team announced the the new harvest figures for the season Monday.

Second-round tight end Trey McBride will wear number 85, while Arizona’s pair of third-round pass rushers Cameron Thomas and Myjai Sanders are expected to wear numbers 97 and 41, respectively.

As for sixth-rounder Keaontay Ingram, the running back will wear No. 30. Fellow sixth-rounder and offensive lineman Lecitus Smith returns to his college days with No. 54.

Seventh-rounders Christian Matthew and Jesse Luketa also turned things around from their college days, opting for numbers 35 and 43 respectively.

And with No. 54 off the board, seventh-round lineman Marquis Hayes opted for No. 78.

The news of the rookie jersey numbers comes after the team announced that wide receiver Marquise Brown would wear No. 2 in her first year in the desert.

The Cardinals added Brown on Day 1 of the draft after trading the 23rd overall pick in exchange for the wide and 100th overall pick, which was used on Thomas.

The jersey changes won’t stop there either.

With McBride taking No. 85, wide receiver Antoine Wesley is now in the market for new numbers.

The same can be said for tight end David Wells, who was No. 41 last season.

The Birmingham Stallions remain the only undefeated team in the USFL, thanks to a dominating defensive performance in a 16-10 win over the Tampa Bay Bandits on Saturday night. In a clash between two of the league’s best teams, the Stallions’ defense limited the Bandits to just 158 yards on offense – 36 in the second half.

Trailing 10-7 at halftime, two field goals from Brandon Aubrey in the third quarter were the only points the Stallions needed thanks to their dominating defense. The Stallions started slow in the game, but Alex McGough led Birmingham on a 17-play, 77-yard drive that fell 9:04 behind to get them started in the second quarter. Birmingham took their first lead of the game thanks to McGough’s 1-yard touchdown run to put them up 7-3 with 1:21 left in the first half.

Tampa Bay’s only touchdown was a pass from Jordan Ta’amu to Rashard Davis for a 9-yard touchdown in the final minute of the first half that gave the Bandits a 10-7 lead. The five-play, 67-yard drive was the latest offensive burst for the Bandits.

Birmingham (4-0) leads Tampa Bay by two games in the South Division (2-2). New Orleans (2-1) takes on the Houston Gamblers on Sunday to cap off Week 4.

In Saturday afternoon’s game, the New Jersey Generals (3-1) established themselves as the North Division favorites, using an impressive quarterback performance from quarterbacks Luis Perez and D’Andre Johnson to beat the Maulers of Pittsburgh. Australian sprint star Caleb Ewan will be hoping to wear the famous race leader’s pink jersey for the first time with a victory in the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia.

On the eve of the start of the race in Budapest, the sprint king revealed that he is aiming for stage wins not only at the Giro but also at the Tour de France and Vuelta Espana this season.

Ewan set out to achieve the same rare Grand Tour treble last year after winning two stages at the Giro, but ended up missing out after breaking his collarbone in a crash on stage three of the Tour.

The 27-year-old hasn’t given up hope of the once-in-a-lifetime honor and admitted he’ll go all-in for the one-year hat-trick if he can pick up early wins in Italy and France .

The Lotto-Soudal sprint ace is very optimistic about his Giro prospects, saying: “I don’t know if I’m in the best shape of my career, but I feel really good.”

He even has the rare chance to take the race leader’s pink jersey – the coveted Maglia Rosa – on the opening 195km stage from Budapest to Visegrad, with Hungary honored to host the Grande Partenza in outside of Italy.

“It’s quite difficult but easier than I thought,” said improving climber Ewan, after recovering the final uphill stretch.

“It’s another five kilometers uphill so quite difficult but I have nothing to lose. I wouldn’t say it’s a golden opportunity – in general it’s probably too hard for me – but it’s not is not impossible.

“I’m going to try to win. Either I’ll have the legs to do it or I won’t – it’s quite simple.”

Ewan enters Stage 1 of the Giro with five race wins already this season and is in great shape heading into the first Grand Tour race of the year.

However, there will be plenty of star talent looking to get the better of the Australian with British great Mark Cavendish, Frenchman Arnaud Demare and Colombian Fernando Gaviria all lining up for sprint honours.

“I consider myself one of the fastest men in the peloton, but you still have to beat the guys here,” said Ewan, who has won nine Grand Tour stages.

“If I’m the best sprinter here and only win one stage, then I’ll probably be disappointed.

“I wasn’t aiming to (win at the three grand tours this year) but maybe if I can win a stage at the Giro and the Tour I can start thinking about maybe going to the Vuelta.

“It’s not really on my mind at the moment. The World Championship is something I’m aiming for, so it will be a bit more about the best preparation for that.

“If we think the Vuelta is going to be a good preparation for the world championships, maybe we’ll go for it.”

One thing is certain. Ewan says he will definitely not finish the Giro and may well retire before the final week to save himself for the Tour.

“The two Tours de France I’ve finished, I haven’t been good for the rest of the season after that, so I think it would be a mistake to finish the Giro and then continue on the Tour,” he said. he declared.

The showpiece game of the week is the 2-0 teams clash between the Birmingham Stallions and the New Orleans Breakers (8 p.m. ET Saturday, FOX).

FOX Bet sports trader Dylan Brosman pointed out that the Breakers beat the winless Tampa Bay Bandits and Philadelphia Stars by a combined score of 57-20 this season. The Stallions defeated the New Jersey Generals and Houston Gamblers by a combined score of 61-52.

“It’s no surprise the Stallions come into the week as 3-point dogs against the Breakers,” Brossman said. “Birmingham’s J’Mar Smith had a great game in Week 2, throwing for 229 yards and two touchdowns (a 97.9 QBR) but faced a tougher defense in Week 3 against the Breakers.

“The Breakers have their own solid QB in Kyle Sloter (second in passing yards at 416) and should be able to put up some points against a Stallions defense that’s allowing a league-worst 23.0 ppg .”

That means Brossman likes the Breakers to win and cover.

TO TAKE: Breakers (-3.5 at FOX Bet) to win by 3.5 points or more

Week 2 of the 2022 USFL season is officially in the books. We have a better idea of who the best teams and players are at this stage, but there’s still a lot of football to play. The Michigan Panthers and Pittsburgh Maulers are the two remaining winless teams, while the Birmingham Stallions and New Orleans Breakers are the two undefeated clubs. The Stallions and Breakers face off next week, which should be fun.

Below, we’ll detail some takeaways from the USFL’s second week of action. Also, be sure to check out the USFL season standings and schedule. We have all the latest news on our USFL page here. First, here’s an overview of all the scores from Week 2:

Friday
New Jersey Generals 10, Michigan Panthers 6

Saturday
Philadelphia Stars 30, Pittsburgh Maulers 23
Birmingham Stallions 33, at Houston Gamblers 38

Sunday
New Orleans Breakers 34, Tampa Bay Bandits 3

The Breakers stand out as the best team

Wow. Nobody saw what happened on Sunday coming. The Breakers completely wiped out the Bandits, 34-3, in what was supposed to be our early season clash between the top two teams. New Orleans took an early lead and just didn’t look back. The offense scored touchdowns on its first two possessions, and the defense forced the Bandits three straight outs on their first three possessions. This defensive unit looks like one of the best in the league, and it made life unbearable in Ta’amu on Sunday. He threw for just 62 yards and one interception!

Kyle Sloter, meanwhile, threw for 266 yards, two touchdowns and also rushed for a touchdown in the win. He looks like a solid player, but he’s been struggling with multiple injuries. The Breakers also have some intriguing weapons in Jordan Ellis, TJ Logan and Jonathan Adams. They seem to be the early favorites to win the championship.

Eyes on Shea Patterson go ahead

Patterson, who was the USFL’s No. 1 draft pick, struggled in the Panthers’ Week 2 loss to the Generals, as he completed 14 of 29 passes for 124 yards. He only had 50 passing yards before the Panthers’ final possession!

Facing a fourth-and-20 from their own 10-yard line with a minute left at four points, the Panthers rallied to move the ball to the generals’ 16-yard line with five seconds left. However, Patterson’s last pitch fell incomplete. He was hesitant to let the ball fly when he had open receivers on the field and struggled to connect with his wides in general. Maybe head coach Jeff Fisher can find something to build on after what has been an impressive last gasp, but Paxton Lynch could get more playing time in the future.

Is Bryan Scott the best QB in the USFL?

Heading into this season, Scott was considered an interesting story, but probably not the best quarterback in the USFL. However, after two weeks of action, should we start asking ourselves this question? The Occidental College signalman went undefeated and won the Spring League Championship a few years ago, and now leads the USFL in passing yards (474) and passing touchdowns (4).

The No. 1 overall pick in Patterson struggled, and the No. 2 overall pick Jordan Ta’amu was crushed on Sunday. J’Mar Smith looks great for the Stallions, but is Scott the real star of this league?

Stallions have a real home advantage

The Birmingham Stallions are the only team in the USFL with “home field advantage”, and that’s actually a thing. They are one of two remaining undefeated teams and around 17,000 fans showed up for their season opener. They also had a decent number of people showing up for their contest last Saturday night. If you watched any other USFL game this week, you probably noticed the attendance was terrible. Seriously, it looked like there were less than 100 people there on Sunday. With only one of the eight teams having what appears to be a legit fan base, it will be something to watch.

First three-point conversion

After scoring a touchdown in the USFL, teams can go for one, two, or three runs. With the Stars up four points after a fourth quarter score, it was the perfect time to score three.

Saturday was for points

In the first week of the USFL, betting Unders in games was lucrative. However, you got burned if you were on the Unders on Saturday. We had a team that scored 30 points in a single game for the first time this season, and there were two of them, as the Stars beat the Maulers, 30-23, and the Stallions beat the Gamblers, 33 -28. This relatively high business was surprising, and for a young league trying to grab headlines, that’s a good thing. The more points, the better.
