Darwin Nunez’s two Liverpool shirt number options with three favorites already taken

Liverpool are closing in on signing Darwin Nunez from Benfica but the Uruguay striker won’t have many shirt numbers to choose from if he arrives at Anfield

Darwin Nunez doesn’t have many shirt number options at Liverpool

Darwin Nunez will find slim choices in the Liverpool dressing room if he arrives in what could be a club-record transfer this summer.

The Reds are locked in talks with Benfica officials to make the striker, who turns 23 this month, their star signing of the window. The Uruguay international is believed to have agreed terms on a five-year deal and it will cost Liverpool £68m, which could rise to £85m with add-ons, to bring him to Anfield.

A big-money signing often has the luxury of choosing their squad number when they land in their new surroundings, especially given the revenue generated from shirt sales. However, Nunez will find almost all the numbers he wore throughout his career already taken at Liverpool, if the transfer is completed.

He wears the No.9 shirt – which is usually worn by a centre-forward – for Benfica and proved why he is one of Europe’s most coveted marksmen by plundering 34 goals in all competitions this season last. At Liverpool, this shirt has been worn by Roberto Firmino for the past five seasons, since leaving No.11 when Mohamed Salah arrived in 2017.

Speaking of the No. 11 tape, it’s usually the number Nunez wore as he racked up 11 caps and two goals for the Uruguay national team. But, as mentioned, Salah occupies that number at Liverpool and there appears to be no chance of him becoming available in the near future as he has confirmed he will be staying for next season.

Firmino, like Salah, has one year left on his contract with the Reds and is also expected to stay on Merseyside, so the chances of the No.9 shirt becoming available are also slim at best. The same goes for the No.21 shirt – which Nunez wore for Spanish club Almeria before joining Benfica – as it is Kostas Tsimikas’ number.

This leaves Nunez with two clear options for his Liverpool shirt number should he indeed arrive at Anfield this summer. Firstly, he could wear 24 – the number he wore towards the end of his time with boyhood club Penarol – as it is vacant.

Alternatively, he could bide his time and hope the No.10 shirt becomes available. Sadio Mane occupies this number but the Senegalese talisman is pushing to leave this summer. Bayern Munich have failed with two offers to sign him but, should he leave, the coveted No.10 would be a fitting shirt for a player of Nunez’s price and potential.
