Rapids host Nashville SC in first-ever regular season meeting at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Colorado Rapids (5-5-3, 18 pts) will host Nashville SC (5-4-4, 19 pts) at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, May 28, in the first-ever game between the two clubs (7 p.m. MT Altitude Sports, Altitude Sports Radio 92.5 FM).
Saturday’s game will be the first time Nashville and the Rapids have crossed paths in MLS since the Tennessean club joined the league as an expansion team in 2020. Longtime Rapids fans will see the return of a few familiar faces in Nashville SC head coach Gary Smith. , assistant coach Steve Guppy, assistant coach Kosuke Kimura, goaltending coach Matt Pickens and defenseman Eric Miller. Smith, Guppy, Kimura and Pickens were all members of the Rapids team that won the 2010 MLS Cup; Pickens currently holds the all-time records for most appearances made by a Rapids goalie (116), most wins by a Rapids goalie (41), and most clean sheets by a Rapids goaltender (29). Miller spent three seasons with the Rapids between 2016 and 2018, making 56 appearances (53 starts) and recording one assist during his time at Colorado.
Robin Fraser’s side are currently unbeaten in 23 consecutive regular-season home games, a club record that is also tied for the fourth-longest streak in MLS history. A result on Saturday would equal the third-longest home unbeaten streak in league history (24).
Rapids goalkeeper William Yarbrough recorded his sixth clean sheet of the year in the club’s final home game on May 22, putting him second in MLS. The two-time Liga MX champion is one shutout away from overtaking Tim Howard for the club’s fourth record clean sheet record in history (23). Forward Diego Rubio leads the Rapids with six goals in 2022, which is T-3rd in MLS, and has scored twice in his last three home appearances.
Nashville SC are unbeaten at home in 2022, but have lost their previous two matches on the road and were outscored 3-0. Forward CJ Sapong and midfielder Hany Mukhtar lead Nashville with four goals each, while Mukhtar also leads the club with five assists. University of Denver alumnus Joe Willis has three clean sheets to his name in 2022.
