sacai x Nike Zoom Cortez 4.0 “White/University Red”

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Nike Cortez, the Swoosh enlisted a handful of select collaborators to reinterpret its iconic design for the next half-century. Among them is sacai, which blended Nike Running heritage and modern principles for the Zoom Cortez 4.0.

Dressed in the old-school performance model’s inaugural color scheme, the sneaker indulges in a form familiar to the original Cortez schemes, though the arrangement courtesy of Chitose Abe strays from the decades-old proposition. . Dual-layered swooshes, tongues and other components recall many of sacai’s Nike Sportswear collaborations from the past three years. And just as striking on the Nike Cortez, the stacked design details play a secondary role to the visible Zoom Air units on the sneaker’s forefoot. Abe’s choice not only injects a new visual language into the model, but also revamps its performance benefits given that the shoe debuted without Air 50 years ago. As the tagline for the collaboration states, the shoe is “still crazy after all these years.”
