What does the deer feed ban mean for local deer hunters?
Local deer hunters could face even more obstacles to pocketing money this year than usual with the deer feeding and baiting ban in Union and Morehouse parishes.
Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission implemented the ban on Monday after a 2.5-year-old female white-tailed deer in a county bordering Arkansas was detected as suffering from a chronic wasting disease.
According to Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission. The disease causes irreversible damage to brain tissue, resulting in salivation, neurological symptoms, emaciation and death of the animal.
According to US Department of Agriculture, hunting in the United States generates nearly $ 12 billion a year in federal, state and local tax revenues.
Kenny Cobb, owner of Cooter’s Bait & Tackle store in Farmerville, said the ban will slow the harvest, but isn’t sure if many will comply with the ban.
âWe have had several who have said that they are definitely going to stop feeding and probably won’t hunt again until they figure it out,â Cobb said.
Cobb said the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries was testing around 300 deer at Union Parish for the CWD and some of its clients said they would wait for test results.
âWe have had several who have said that they are definitely going to stop feeding and will probably wait until these tests are over to hunt more,â said Cobb.
Jason Albritton, an employee of Spotted Dog Sporting Goods in Colombia, said the ban would primarily affect private land hunters like him.
âThis is going to take a lot of deer off their property,â Albritton said. “It’s going to make it a lot harder for these guys, but for the guys who are public land hunters, it’s probably a good thing for them. It helps the person depending on which side you’re on.”
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fishermen has been collecting samples for the disease since 2002. To date, more than 12,000 samples have been tested, but the disease has never been detected in the state.
